Man dead in jump off McCully St. bridge; H-1 eastbound closed

Police closed the eastbound lanes of the H-1 freeway at Punahou Street this afternoon after a man jumped to his death from the McCully Street bridge.

He was apparently hit by a Roberts Hawaii tour bus, which came to a stop near the Bingham Street offramp. The bus was empty except for the driver.

A pickup truck also is stopped at the scene as police investigate.

The police alert regarding a “traffic accident” was issued at 3:42 p.m., several minutes after the initial reports of a person jumping off the bridge.

H-1 eastbound traffic remains heavily backed up.

The University Avenue onramp is open in the eastbound direction, but the Ward Avenue onramp is closed.
