Eldredge service Sunday at Punahou 

Eldredge III is the winningest coach in Punahou’s football history at 103-41-4 record. He won four ILH titles from 1959 to 1962 and 1968 to 1976. He coached the Buffanblu baseball teams from 1965 to 1970, compiling a 78-24-1 record, capturing two state crowns.

Eldredge III was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Lahaina to David "Pops" and Leilehua (Judd) Eldredge. The 1949 Punahou graduate went on to play football at Stanford, where he earned a degree in education. He also earned a post-graduate degree from the University of San Francisco. He returned to Punahou in 1956, where he taught math and science, started the Hawaiian studies program and founded Punahou’s Holoku Pageant.

The Punahou Athletics Hall of Famer is survived by wife, Jean Eiko; sons David "Boy" IV (Valerie) and Duane (Sue); daughter Cynthie (Richard) Keeno; brother H.J. "Pal"; sisters Hattie (West) Phillips and Bertha Lima; and 13 grandchildren.

Pierre and Pam Omidyar give $50M to Hawaii nonprofit

The couple has supported several local causes and organizations in the Islands. They helped to launch Kanu Hawaii, backed the expansion of Mao Organic Farms in Waianae and most recently launched the Ulupono Initiative, which makes nonprofit grants and for profit investments aimed at sustainability.

“Our family was warmly welcomed by old friends and new acquaintances when we decided to make Hawaii our home,” said Pam Omidyar, who grew up in Hawaii Kai and attended Iolani School. “That experience was a strong reminder of the important role community plays in every aspect of life here in the islands.”

The third initiative is $6 million, six-year challenge grant, to be matched by other donors, for building a sustainable complex at Punahou School to be named the Omidyar Kindergarten-First Grade Neighborhood.

All three of the first initiatives have a matching component. Punahou School will do its own fundraising for the K-1 campus, while the foundation will work on raising donations to match the others.

‘Coral Bank’ Created to Preserve Threatened Reefs

Oct. 26, 2009 — An international meeting on climate change in Copenhagen has heard the prospects of saving the world’s coral reefs now appear so bleak there are plans to freeze samples to preserve them for the future.

Describing it as a last-ditch attempt, a team of scientists from the U.K. is collecting reef samples that will be frozen and cultivated in what they are describing as an ark.

Waikiki aquarium: Reef rescue

Waikíkí Aquarium researchers are maintaining a haven for rare coral from Hawaii waters at their oceanside laboratory. With the potential for repopulating a devastated habitat, the aquarium is calling it an ark for the delicate reef-building creatures.

The ark is a flow-through vessel that feeds coral with a constant supply of fresh, low-nutrient seawater — free of predators and parasites — under natural light. The 600-gallon tank is not open to the public, but as the coral grows, cuttings are pulled from it for various exhibit tanks.

The ark is similar in setup to the aquarium’s coral farm, which was launched about three decades ago as a fragment tank, and quickly grew into a 1,000-gallon public exhibit for South Pacific coral. Researchers have used the farm to develop a method for propagating small fingers of coral and growing it — at rates of up to 8 inches a year — into healthy coral heads.

Pieces of the South Pacific coral head are shared with researchers around the world. And corals from the farm are included in almost every aquarium exhibiting coral in the United States. Housing a total of 127 species of South Pacific and Hawaiian coral, the Waikíkí Aquarium has the largest coral collection in the western hemisphere.
