February 2008

Don’t know how long these links will be “good” as I’m fairly certain they are going to be put into the HVO archive.  But:

This is one of several lava streams of the Prince Avenue flow slicing through the forest between the cross streets of Paradise and Orchid. The lava stream is about 3 meters (10 feet) wide

Both boy’s and girl’s win state tournament.

The “breaking news” link is here.  I’ll update this post when I find perma-links.

Is this an image of Kilauea or the Middle Street merge at rush hour?  Hmmm…kinda hard to tell.

OK.  Maybe not so hard to figure out.  From Hawaii Volcano Observatory: Early morning view of the channelized `a`a flow extending southeast from the TEB shield complex. Overflows from the tops of other TEB shields are visible in the background.

OK…NY Times reports that the Koreans will take kimchee into space, .  This is not surprising.  But I do wonder about this line in the article:

Ordinary kimchi is teeming with microbes, like lactic acid bacteria, which help fermentation. On Earth they are harmless, but scientists feared they could turn dangerous in space if cosmic rays and other radiation cause them to mutate.

So, what are they worried about?  Killer mutant flesh-eating zombie kimchee?  Sounds like some bad 1950’s sci-fi movie.

In the ILH Girls basketball tournament has gone to semi-finals and Punahou won against Konawaena, 45-41.

For the boys, they are also in the quarter finals (vs. Mililani), but no word as of the time of this posting on any score.  The schedule is here.

OK.  I stayed away from politics so far, but a certain class of ‘79 grad is making some news and has gained 14 Democratic party delegates to Hillary Clinton’s 6.

For those of you on the mainland, the Hawaii Democratic Caucus had record turnout.  And reaction to what Senator Inouye said about Senator Obama and Punahou School here.  I couldn’t find the exact text of what Senator Inouye said, but the best I could do is from KGMB.  Quoting…

KGMB9′S STACY LOE: “As you know Sen. Daniel Inouye, who is backing Hillary Clinton, said in an interview quote ‘he went to school in Hawaii. But he went to Punahou and that was not a school for the impoverished….’ Now he suggests that going to an elite private school means that you are somehow a disconnect from the average Hawaii resident and American. What do you say about that?”

OBAMA: “Well you know I think that Daniel Inouye knows better than that. I went to Punahou on scholarship. I grew up in my grandmother’s apartment because I was raised by a single mom. We were on food stamps for a time while I was in Hawaii and grew up in a two bedroom apartment. My grandmother still lives there… and so you know I struggled just like a lot of kids struggle. I had love and I had an education, but I didn’t have a lot of money. And I wasn’t living in wealthy neighborhoods in Honolulu. So I think Danny I understand is poorer than Sen. Clinton. But he knows better than that and he should focus on how we can come together to solve the problems of Hawaii and throughout the country.”

Anyway, that’s enough for politics on this site.

Aloha -

We are still looking for some wonderful volunteers for our luau on June 14, 2008. Right now, have just over one hundred volunteers but we’d like to get to around 150 or so. Classmates from Virginia, California, and as far away as Singapore will be volunteering.

We have two shifts, one in the morning to early afternoon (8AM to 2 PM to do task such as food prep and decorations. In the afternoon to evening (2 PM to 9 PM) we need help to serve the food, work the bar, and much more. Of course, if you can work both shifts, that would be great. Afterwards, we’ll have a post-party for all of our volunteers up at the imu pit.

Working the luau is much more rewarding that any other reunion event. You’ll re-invigorate old friendships and meets old classmates that you would never have talked to back in school.

So we would love to hear from you. We need as many volunteers as we can get and I promise that you’ll have a good time. You can e-mail me at: steve (at) 3155alani (dot) net or call me at 808-780-6240. Or drop us a note in the comments section below.

Well, the National Weather Service won’t post data for February for a while, but the US Geological Survey has a stream flow indicator on Kapiolani Ave.  I think this is a few blocks makai of S. King Street (near the old Cinerama Theater…which is now an auto parts store).  You can see the on Friday, it was off and on with a few small bumps in the volume of water going down the storm drain.  But Saturday (Feb 2) has two big spikes.  In short, it was a bit wet.  For those who are interested, you can find USGS streamflow data here.  Top graph is stream flow in cubic feet per second and the bottom is stream height in feet.
