November 2007

I’ll put the bulk of it below the fold  (yeah, I still remember some newspaper terminology from my time at my college newspaper).  But for those of you who want to come to our meeting and see what this luau thing is all about, feel free to joint us.  We’ll be at the Alumni House at 5:45 PM.  (more…)

WoooHooo.  The UH football Warriors won the WAC by beating Boise State.  Hmm…with #13 Texas losing to unranked Texas A&M, maybe, just maybe UH will get a shot at a BCS bowl.

For the non-football fans, some science news.  For the first time since 1992, there was a lava eruption at Pu’u O’o back in July 2007.  This resulted in a lava flow channel.  This week, the channel was bypassed and a new eruption has formed around the channel flank.  You can find recent photos here.  Maps of the eruption are here.

Finally, don’t forget that we have our regular monthly meeting next week at the alumni house on Wednesday 5:45PM.  This will be our last meeting of the year since our December meeting would have been the day after Christmas.

As usual, you can contact me at steve (at) 3155alani (dot) net.

Hi guys – Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and post a couple of local sports items that might interest those of you on the mainland.

For the football-centric crowd, the University of Hawaii has a shot at a BSC bowl game should they beat Boise State on Friday.  This, of course, is tremendously exciting for UH and Coach June Jones has asked for a little aloha for the Boise team during the sold-out game.  You can read about it here.  And since this game can potentially send a non-BCS team to a BCS bowl, there are conspiracy theories around whether UH will actually get the recognition that they should.

Not to forget women’s sports, the 11th ranked UH volleyball team beat LMU.  They play again tonight (Senior Night) before waiting for the field to be set for the NCAA tournament.

What will I be doing?  I’ll be roasting the turkey, hot smoking some salmon (provided the weather is nice), and listening to an audiobook that I just got (Anthony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential”).  Should be a relaxing day.

Hi guys…guess who?

Anyway, a quick news post for those of you who remember the heroic efforts of the Punahou football team back in ‘84. As I recall, we didn’t exactly do too well. But today’s team is doing very well, ranked #2 (behind St. Louis) with a record of 7-2.  The Honolulu Advertiser

Hi, Steve Lee here again.  I thought I’d take some time to continue on with a description of what we’re doing for the 2008 luau.

At brunch/breakfast, we’ll have some time to relax and chat in the cafeteria.  At around 11AM or so, we’ll have to split up into a couple of groups.  The first group is the decorations crew.  We’ll need to finish off any last minute preparations and put up the last few displays.  Meanwhile, we’ll need a few strong backs to move the food we just prepared along with the soft drinks down to the refrigerator truck that is down at lower field.

The rest of our volunteers will probably be needed up at the imu pit.  By now, it should be time to uncover the pit and start shredding the first batch of pig.  Just like with decorations, the more hands we have the easier it will be.  And the shredding is especially important because this first batch is what we’ll be having for lunch.

Speaking of lunch, we usually serve around 2:30 or so.  (more…)

Hi – Steve here again.  Just wanted to drop a quick note here for Mainland readers.  Winter started here with a deluge.  Kaneohe got about 14 inches of rain and it looks like more is on the way.  In Manoa we had thunder and lightning starting around midnight and it continued on for hours.

You can read about it here:
